Statement
Kathryn Lang creates immaculate paintings that formally address the nature of figurative and abstract painting. Originating from photographs taken from the screen, the image is subjected to lengthy processes of manipulation before being rendered in paint. Lang ultimately creates a de-contextualised static image that is defined by a complex construction of image on lines. These structural, compositional lines might be horizontal or vertical and either expand or condense the original image within the picture plane. Contrast and tonal levels are also accentuated and manipulated to increase the direct visual impact of Lang’s work.
